After many years of using my body as material source, mainly that of my menstrual blood, the end must eventually come, as I move towards menopause.
So how does one re-shift their own vision of identity ? … lots of drawings… that eventually led to sculptures, and then that eventually led back to a more traditional medium – that of oil paint. After four years of searching, this new body has emerged : “the Clones.”
Lavínia Diniz Freitas, Curator at ApertoArts about the Clones :
The dressed up or stripped-down and baring all juxtaposed historical and contemporary figures in Jess’ artworks unashamedly challenge patriarchy. By introducing topics and elements of the body shunned or demonised within our society, she opens up possibilities to make the viewer aware of their own presumptions.
